2021 Dry Olympic Games

July 20, 2021

As we’ve discussed the advertisements leading up to the games and how you can watch the games from your home, it is only fitting to cover what the games will look like for those given the opportunity to attend.

Aside from setting the capacity limitations at 50% and permitting only domestic viewers in-person, the IOC has updated a new restriction on the games surrounding alcohol sales. At the time of the IOC’s decision, restrictions were placed on the food and beverage industry as restaurants in Tokyo have been asked to essentially remain dry by limiting alcohol consumption to “groups of two people for up to 90 minutes between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.” Naturally, this decision comes at a high price for restaurants in the city as alcohol sales may be a large revenue generator.

Now, you may not be surprised to hear that the IOC received backlash after ruling the vendors were allowed to sell alcoholic beverages to spectators at the Olympics, but the IOC clearly was as they quickly reversed this decision and deemed the 2021 Tokyo Olympic games a dry event.
