Predications for the Digital Era

May 10, 2016

It’s no denying the digital saturated era is vastly changing the world every minute. However longtime advocate of a digital reform, Douglas Rushkoff, just published his latest book Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity, which takes another stab at our current digital dependent society. As a reputable documentary filmmaker, published author, and media commentator, Rushkoff addresses two interesting and relevant topics in his interview with theguardian.com. Since its start in 2009, Uber has changed the way we view traditional transportation. With breathtaking speed, the private company has overtaken taxis and limousines in key markets. A five-star Uber rating is now as important in status recognition as the number of Twitter followers. Rushkoff describes Uber as “a platform monopoly getting to leverage that monopoly into another vertical whether it be delivery, drones, or logistics. The prosperity of all the people who used to be in the cabbie industry ends up sacrificed to the growth of this company”. It’ll be interesting to see where Uber goes in the next few years if it will continue to be the golden child of transportation or if it’s ultimately taken its last ride. Rushkoff takes another stab at the Cadillac of social media, Facebook. Facebook has become one of the most influential digital marketing tools nowadays (and buying Instagram for $1 billion surely helped). Rushkoff decided to delete his Facebook account in 2013 and has not reactivated it since. Rushkoff addresses the risk of actively choosing not to use Facebook’s platform, “I’m sure there is way of using Facebook as a ladder to get somewhere else. But also knowing what Facebook does behind the scenes, I thought it was bad digital hygiene” Rushkoff explains. Luckily, the acclaimed author has a strong enough fan following that he does not need to climb the Facebook ladder. Despite unconventional marketing strategies, he has built an undoubtedly reputable reputation as a media voice the world listens to.
