A Bigger Slice of Pi, No Piece of Cake

April 16, 2013

We begin this issue with a bit of news that isn’t exactly new. You may have heard that Rhythm and Hues, the company behind the Academy Award-winning visual effects in Life of Pi, declared bankruptcy shortly before the Oscars. What is new, and just as jaw dropping as the digital magic companies like Rhythm and Hues create, is knowing that the profits made by Hollywood studios rarely trickle down to visual-effects companies even as studios are demanding more and more effects to make blockbuster films. Fortunately for Rhythm and Hues, the company was recently purchased by an LA-based affiliate of Prana Studios (Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Tron: Legacy). But as avid movie goers and professionals in an analogous industry, it opens our eyes to what we’re seeing in theaters more so than any 3D wizardry. Learn more about the effects industry’s saga in this excellent report from NPR.
