A Budweiser’s Tale

February 10, 2017

Budweiser has always reigned superior at the Super Bowl. They are the commercial viewers wait for, talk about for days, and remember forever. Their campaigns’ brilliance lies in their unique ability to take beer and merge it so delicately with viewers’ emotions. Clydesdales anyone? And this time around, Budweiser went back to its origin and its pursuit of the American dream. It is the tale of Adolphus Busch’s journey from Germany to America. He survives a boat fire, slugs his way through muddy fields, and when he finally reaches St. Louis, a slur of insults welcomes him. At the end of the 60-second slot, he is seen having a beer with Eberhard Anheuser sharing notes for how to create Budweiser. The “Born the Hard Way” ad is meant to talk about how hard work essentially pays off, making dreams come true. “It is a commercial about the American dream, perseverance, and commitment; but also a clever commercial that relevantly addresses the controversial national political debate on immigration and refugee rights. “We created the Budweiser commercial to highlight the ambition of our founder, Adolphus Bush, and his unrelenting pursuit of the American dream. This is a story about our heritage and the uncompromising commitment that goes into brewing our beer – it’s a story we believe will resonate with today’s entrepreneurial generation – those who continue strive for their dreams,” released Anheuser-Bush InBev. Essentially, this commercial is a branding campaign, but it effectively embodies what we all are in need of, American spirit.
