A Hidden Statement

February 10, 2017

You may have missed it, but Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime performance was more than glitz and glamour. Her thirteen-minute set began with “God Bless America” followed abruptly by “This Land is Your Land”. A strategic choice that didn’t need much explanation as to why. The Woody Guthrie tune was popular in many of the protests that have taken place after President Trump took office. The song was sang at the women’s marches across the nation the day after Trump’s inauguration and at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport when Trump placed his immigration travel ban. She was singing from the roof of the stadium, under lighted drones that formed the American flag. Gaga was striving for unification, an admirable goal for the theoretical event. Her moves, the stage set-up, the flashy sets, and the lighting design all embodied the bold imagination of Gaga being a groundbreaking artist for this generation. “I don’t know if I will succeed in unifying America. You’ll have to ask America when it’s over. But the only statement that I’ll be making during the halftime show are the ones that I’ve been consistently making throughout my career – I believe in passion for inclusion. I believe in the spirit of equality, and the spirit of this country as one of love and compassion and kindness. So my performance will have both those philosophies.” And she did so with style and class.
