A Night of Divas

February 24, 2017

It was a night of electric live television in two divas’ worlds, Adele and Beyoncé. The British soul singer won five (big) awards, including Album, Record, and Song of the Year, but used her final moments to praise Queen Bey. “I felt like it was her time to win,” the disarmingly honest singer said. Adele tearfully and genuinely talked about how much she adored the singer and how she felt awkward about her win compared to Beyoncé’s “monumental” album “Lemonade”. Beyoncé played the bridesmaid role for the second time in the Big Four category, but wowed (as she always does) the audience with her spiritual and captivating performance. Her masterpiece performance embodied control, elaborate video elements, and practical effects (and the world loved the frequent camera shots of Jay-Z and Blue Ivy cheering her on). “Lemonade” ‘s loss speaks to a more troubling trend that has plagued the Grammys. The Grammys have a reputation of valuing sales over craft. Previous years’ winners have shown that the award show consistently underrates R&B and Hip-Hop artists. Beyoncé, for instant, has lost Album of the Year for the past five years to Adele and Beck and she is one of the most successful and talented music artists in the world. But, all is ok when you have the unification of two powerhouse divas. When Adele was speaking to Beyoncé during her Album of the Year speech, it was one of the few moments the night felt spontaneous and charged. Adele and Beyoncé appeared to have nothing but support and love for each other’s craft and woman.
