A Strained Start for Award Season

January 13, 2017

The stars of the 2017 Golden Globes didn’t seem in the mood to shine this year. The Golden Globes prides itself on being unpredictable live television and nothing short of a Hollywood party. But this year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to play it safe and it, unfortunately, was not well played. Even with the beloved late-night show, Jimmy Fallon, as the host the city of stars didn’t game for Fallon’s brand of fun and games. Beginning the show with Fallon’s teleprompter failing certainly did not help kick the night off, but the political pink elephant in the room clouded the entire night and quite frankly, made the show dull. And this was even before Streep’s speech. Taking the stage to accept the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, Meryl Streep chose to campaign on behalf of Hilary Clinton versus acknowledging her award, “disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.” After that, the mood and tone had irreversibly turned. Thankfully the young enthusiasm from the show’s big winner, La La Land, and star-studded fashion, helped move the night along (at a snail’s pace). But overall, the show was unimpressive and underwhelming.
