Art for all to see. by Tom

Two weekends ago I went with a few friends to check out the art galleries in West Chelsea and was floored. I believe the vast open spaces found in these former garages has inspired the current monumental nature of modern contemporary art. At David Zwirner we walked through a giant igloo by Doug Wheeler. At Andrea Rosen David Altmejd’s “Juices” a plexiglas labyrinthine that fills the room and blows the mind. Finally, at Gagosian the gallery expanded into the neighboring building to accommodate Richard Serra’s “7 Plates, 6 Angles” a monumental piece constructed of 7 steel plates that measure 8 feet high and 44 feet long. Walking through the piece gave me a sense of incredible stillness. chelseagallerymap.com
