Breakdancing to Take the Olympic Floor

March 1, 2019

Is dancing a sport? If you ask dancers themselves, they’ll likely say yes – and with a new proposal to make breakdancing an Olympic sport in 2024, they now have a stronger argument.

Organizers of the 2024 Summer Olympic games in Paris have submitted a proposal to implement the sport starting with their edition of the festivities. Unlike individual gymnastics and figure skating competitions, Olympic breakdancing would feature opposing dancers and dance teams going head to head in an effort to one-up the other.

Sign us up to watch that!

Breakdancing was already featured in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, so this kind of competition wouldn’t be unprecedented. It’ll be a long time before we know whether or not the proposal gets accepted by the International Olympic Committee, but break dancers are considering the proposal a victory and a step forward.

Like any kind of change, Olympic breakdancing might be polarizing at first. But in our minds, any way to incorporate art with athleticism on a global stage is a major win.
