Chili’s Change Up

July 8, 2016

Chili’s is taking a step back and reminding their customers the major restaurant chain was started by “hamburger hippies” as an effort to try to increase their sales decline. The throwback campaign’s tagline is ‘Chilin’ Since 75’, revisiting the restaurant’s origin. Its marketing strategy is threefold; television, digital, and social media. The first three commercials use songs from the ‘70s and its debut on Snapchat will have retro-themed filters. The chain will also start incorporating more of a ’70s music inspired soundtrack into its restaurants to further market the new campaign. “Over time the category advertising, casual dining advertising in particular, started to blend and look very similar. We just felt like our creative and our campaign wasn’t breaking through”, said Chili’s SVP-Chief of Marketing Officer Krista Gibson. Along with a TV, digital, and social marketing campaign, Chili’s is changing up their menu also to include grass-fed beef burger patties for $1. We admire the chain’s historical inspired marketing strategy. Rather then a ‘do-over’, it’s a ‘re-due’.
