Facebook and Instagram Outages Cause Outrage

March 15, 2019

As if this week’s college admissions scandal wasn’t enough, the social media realm gave people more reason to be upset, as Facebook and Instagram experienced historically bad outages on Wednesday.

For nearly an entire day (which is the longest such time period in Facebook’s history), users worldwide were having difficulty not only posting on Facebook and Instagram, but also simply logging on. Facebook released a statement saying that the issue was due to a “server configuration change”.

Unsurprisingly, users turned to other social media platforms (such as Twitter) in order to express their frustration. Many also found humor in the outage, posting a variety of relevant gifs and other clever jokes. Actor Josh Peck made light of the situation, tweeting sarcastically about a potential positive side of the technical difficulties:

“With Facebook and Instagram down, millennials are reporting strange new feeling of not missing out.”

It seems that both platforms are up and running smoothly once again, but we learned one thing for sure: when Facebook and Instagram struggle, we all notice.
