Fixing Facebook

January 12, 2018

“Every year I take on a personal challenge to learn something new. I’ve visited every U.S. sate, run 365 miles, built an AI for my home, read 25 books, and learned Mandarin. Today feels a lot like that first year. The world feels anxious and divided, and Facebook has a lot of work to do – whether it’s protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent.” Mark Zuckerberg sums up his New Year resolution and what it actually means for Facebook and the billions of people on it. With the tech industry, no longer being just the tech industry and apps no longer being just apps, Facebook has a greater reach and impact than any communication system in history. Facebook has grown more willing to accept its role as a central distributor of information over the past year and Zuckerberg’s resolution suggests the company is increasingly ready to address its many shortcomings in that role. This was very important for Zuckerberg to acknowledge, the social media network frequently goes awry when its guidelines are misapplied – banning people who shouldn’t be banned or allowing people to stay who are clearly acting inappropriately. Hopefully this ‘new’ Facebook puts Zuckerberg’s users back to the foundation on which the social network was built on.
