For It’s One, Two, Three (Home) Runs You’re Out…of the Ballpark

August 16, 2019

Over the weekend, the Houston Astros became the first team to score 20 runs in a game this season, destroying the Baltimore Orioles 23-2. Rookie Yordan Alvarez had three home runs, the first Astro to do so in one game since 2017.

Along with Alvarez, Reds outfielder Aristides Aquino also had three home runs in his game that day. Aquino and Alvarez became the first set of rookies to each have a three-homer game on the same day in all of MLB history.

Many eyes have been on Alvarez, who was brought up to Houston in June. The young star has 17 home runs and a major league record of 51 RBIs in just his first 45 games. It is likely he will be receiving the American League Rookie of the Year honors at the end of this season.

This was only the second time the Astros have scored at least 20 runs in their franchise history. The Orioles are on course to break a record as well, but it would not be something to celebrate about. It is possible they will allow over 330 home runs this year, shattering the current record of 258. Sorry all you Orioles fans.
