Helping the Blind See Facebook.

April 12, 2016

Everyday, more than 2 billion photos are shared on Facebook and their subsidiaries: Instagram and WhatsApp. The conversation around those photos is tremendous, but sadly, the more than 250 million people who are blind or severely visually impaired feel left out of the conversation. Thankfully, Facebook launched their new alternative test function that uses recognition technology to add a greater degree of description to photos. Prior to this advancement, people with visual impairments using screen readers only heard the name of the person who shared the image, followed by the word “photo.” Now, when they scroll through their newsfeeds, they might hear, “Image may contain three people, smiling, outdoors.” It may not be perfect, but visually impaired users have said: “…even having three words, just helps flesh out all of the details that I can’t see. That makes me feel included and like I’m a part of it, too.” Facebook says its mission is to make the world more connected and this advancement makes us feel even fonder of Facebook.
