India Satellite Mangalyaan Reaches Mars Orbit on First Try

December 16, 2014

India recently sent its first satellite to Mars, and it actually made it. India is now the only nation that can boast a 1/1 success rate on maiden voyages to Mars, besting not only the United States, but also Asian rivals China and Japan. In an even more impressive turn of events, the Mangalyaan mission only cost $74 million, making it by far the cheapest expedition of its kind. To put that price tag in perspective, the movie “Gravity” had production costs of over $100 million. The biggest takeaway for India from this mission is that the country has the technological capabilities to complete a project of this extent. With this success under their belt, the next step is a manned mission to the moon.
