Instagram Privacy Policy for Youth Users

August 12, 2021

With the rise of popularity among social media, more and more youth users are downloading apps such as Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. While one may hope these platforms will be teen-friendly, inappropriate content can still find its way onto the screens of younger users. To help diminish this possibility, Instagram issued a new safety setting where “it’s making new accounts private by default for kids under 16.” This initiative furthers the company’s previous commitment to protecting users by banning kids under the age of 13 from using the platform. After seeing this new policy on Instagram, we can’t help but consider what other precautions may be made in the future to continue to protect the media consumption of the youth.
