Retail Thanksgiving Boycott

November 14, 2016

The Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the United States, has decided to take a stand and close its doors this Thanksgiving for Black Friday shopping. Over the past several years, the majority of retailers were opening their doors on Thanksgiving night to extend Black Friday’s super sales. “We’ve been talking about this for months, looking at the numbers, looking at the pros and cons,” said Jill Renslow, The Mall of America’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. The megamall happily notified their employees and tenants that it would be breaking the retail holiday pattern. “We’re excited to give this day back to our employees so they can celebrate with their families.” Renslow shared. As of lately, shoppers have continued to show up at stores in massive numbers on Thanksgiving in search for great deals. Retailers argued that the reason they kept opening on Thanksgiving was because shoppers would prefer to go sale hunting with their family and friends after the turkey dinner instead of waking up in the middle of the night to hit the sales the next day. Despite some shoppers’ preferences, The Mall of America has decided to bring back the magic of Black Friday. The mall will open in the early morning hours the day after Thanksgiving with a special ‘door opening ceremony’ and other retail festivities.
