Sharks Are Hungry, Too. That’s Just…Jaw-some

August 2, 2019

Something’s been stirring the waters, and we’re going to need a bigger boat for it. This past Sunday began Shark Week, one of TV’s most popular weeks of the summer.

This year, sharks aren’t the only ones hungry. Discovery Channel came out strong, biting into a variety of networks with their marketing strategy. Working with sister networks HGTV, ID, Food Network and Motor Trend, they created promo-seeming spots for TV shows, such as Chopped, that then turned into surprise Shark Week spots.

This strategy helps expand Shark Week’s audience, catching viewers’ attentions on channels other than Discovery. It’s a very important week for the organization, some even calling it Discovery Channel’s “Super Bowl.”

While many will be watching the shows safely from a couch, this week is just a reminder to be aware when you’re in the waters. Sharks have continued to be spotted along coastlines this summer, including unusual places such as a Great White sighting in the Long Island Sound. If you missed the first few days, it’s not over yet. Catch the end of Shark Week today through Sunday, August 4th. Hurry, before it’s too bait.
