The Rise of Athleisure

June 12, 2017

With companies like SoulCycle, Crossfit, and Pure Barre dominating the fitness industry, the trend of athleisure apparel has found a home in the fashion industry. It has even found its way into the wardrobes of those who don’t even workout (i.e. the popular SoulCycle signature skull leggings or tank tops). People, more specifically woman, are seen strolling through the New York City streets wearing athletic wear as if they were strolling the streets in couture. The fashion line between athletic wear and high-end clothing has become that distorted. How did athleisure makes its way to mainstream fashion? Apparently athleisure wear sales totaled $45.9 billion just last year and that astounding number is predicted to only keep growing. With brands like Lululemon, Nike, and Adias paving the way for athleisure, it was only a matter of time before celebrities came onboard and began endorsing the fashion craze. Tory Burch, Lily Putlizer, Rebecca Minkoff, Kate Hudson, and even Beyonce herself, have taken a stab at athletic wear. The once traditional all black workout outfit has become a thing of the past, the craze now is color blocking. Like anything in fashion, athleisure wear must keep up with industry trends, but that can come at a higher price tag, even for workout clothes. A pair of Lululemon leggings, for example, can retail for as much as $128. But people are buying high-end workout clothes, signing up for more elite workout classes, and beyond obsessed with wearing athleisure outside the gym. Bottom line, it is taking over more than just our closets.
