Tom’s Recipe For Combatting Winter Gloom

I grew up in Detroit and winter was long and bleak and endless. I remember getting out of school for summer vacation still having to wear my winter coat—really! To survive I would plan local adventures. Going to Little Mexico, Trapper’s Alley, Cranbrook, Windsor (Yes, I grew up north of Canada), Ann Arbor, Lafayette Coney Island, and Belle Isle. Belle Isle was my favorite. An Island park in the Detroit River where the city would combine many Christmas trees into one large tree and the fire department would spray them with water to form one huge frozen Christmas tree that would last until May.
