An Unexpected Sweep: Oscars 2020

February 14, 2020

The Oscars received plenty of backlash weeks before it aired this year. Many people were upset because no women directors were nominated and very few people of color were nominated for any categories.  However, many believe the iconic awards show partially redeemed itself with the nominations of South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho’s film Parasite. The film took home Oscars for Best Original Screenplay, Best International Film, Best Director, and Best Picture. This feat has Joon-Ho tied with Walt Disney for the record of most wins in a single night.

Although it was host less, there were dozens of exciting presenters including Chris Rock, Steve Martin, Natalie Portman, and performances by Eminem and Janelle Monae. Joaquin Phoenix took home a Best Actor Oscar for his role in Joker, Renee Zellweger won Best Actress for portraying Judy Garland in Judy, Brad Pitt received Best Supporting Actor for his role in Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, and Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress for her part in Marriage Story. With Parasite’s unexpected sweep and exciting surprise musical guests, this year’s Oscars was certainly a memorable one.
