Chinese Restaurant Names.

Did you know that there are more Chinese restaurants in the United States than McDonald’s, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Wendy’s—combined? Wow.  According to journalist, Jennifer 8 Lee, American-Chinese food is a cuisine that’s practically all its own. When mapping all the Chinese restaurants in America the map doesn’t necessarily correspond to the density of Americans with Chinese heritage, but rather it corresponds to the density of our general population. Yep, no matter where you are, you’re close to one of the 50,000 Chinese restaurants in America. Lee wanted to quantify the naming of these restaurants to see if there were any patterns and after sifting through the data, some interesting patterns became clear. If you searched the words: China, Chinese, Express, Golden, Panda, Dragon, Garden and Wok, you’d find the vast majority of Chinese restaurants. As marketers hell-bent on finding unique ways to stand out, we find this disheartening. Mundane naming may dominate Chinese restaurant naming, but check out the reporter’s name, Jennifer 8 Lee.
