Crazy Important Movie

Cutting-edge “Crazy Rich Asians” helps change Hollywood’s leading role standards.

The movie “Crazy Rich Asians” was a big deal. There was a lot at stake for this film. If it did well, it could shatter the glass ceiling that had been holding romantic comedies back. And luckily, it was a smashing success. It’s no secret that there is a lack of diversity in today’s blockbuster leading men and women.

Enter the film, “Crazy Rich Asians” which turned down a deal with Netflix to bring the film to the big screen in hopes of shattering the mold of our current, antiquated Hollywood gold standard.  “It was a barrier-breaking moment demanded to be shared, not just streamed. Twitter helped drive that message home, as users took to the social media platform to wrangle support and share just how powerful it was to see people who looked like them on the silver screen. Some saw the movie more than once in an effort to “do their part” for box office numbers.”

It was a gamble to choose the risk of the theater insides of the lucrative payday of Netflix…but the risk paid off. This film has broken barriers and proves that we no longer need to live and create within the confides of the stereotypical Hollywood star.

“Crazy Rich Asians” simply changes the game. It shows that minorities don’t need Spandexed suits or powers to be bankable.” Minorities have the power to sell out theaters, even in the notoriously August box office lull. It’s exciting to witness the shift in our leading stars and hopefully, this is a domino effect. Have you seen “Crazy Rich Asians” yet?
