Karaoke Carpool Sings Its Way into Apple Music

August 5, 2016

If one of your favorite pastimes isn’t YouTubing James Corden’s karaoke carpool, you haven’t lived. The 15-minute video segments are addictively entertaining, filled with laugh out loud moments, and musically gifted celebrity passengers. Corden, late-night talk show host of The Late Late Show with James Corden, introduced this viral sensation to his audience as a single segment awhile back. The idea’s inspiration came from a themed sketch on a British charity television special Corden had participated in. It quickly turned into a recurring segment as the audience couldn’t get enough of Corden and his musical guests signing along to their own songs while driving around. The segments have featured mainstream artists such as Justin Bieber, Stevie Wonder, One Direction, Adele, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and First Lady Michelle Obama. Most viewers would catch the segments on The Late Late Show’s YouTube channel (FYI: the Adele karaoke carpool bit broke records when it reached 42 million views in just five days). The popularity sparked interest in various marketers hoping to capitalize on this moment. Apple Music won the pitch to produce a 16-episode series based project. Each installment will feature a to-be-announced host (sigh, it will not be Corden) and celebrity guests participating in sing-a-longs. The karaoke carpool prototype will be available exclusively to Apple Music subscribers. A premiere date has yet to be announced.
