Lil Nas X Still Riding at the Top

August 16, 2019

Only 3% of all Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s have held the spot for 10 weeks or more. Just two weeks ago we saw Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” break the record for most consecutive weeks at No. 1 as it reached its 17th week at the top. It surpassed Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito”.

The song is continuing to extend its record and pass previous ones, now spending its 19th week at number one. This helped it surpass Drake’s record with “One Dance” on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart.

On the Hot Rap songs chart, three artists have spent 18 weeks at No. 1. This includes Drake, Iggy Azalea, and Missy Elliott. However, Lil Nas X passed all of them as well when he reached the 19th week on top. His song is also the shortest length to reach the No. 1 spot since 1965.

=Old Town Road was originally a solo song, but Lil Nas X decided to add Billy Ray Cyrus to it. There are also multiple remix versions that have helped keep the song at number one, since Billboard combines the original and remixes as one when calculating the chart positions of the songs. The young star is only 20-years-old, and this is likely just the beginning of his success story.
