Simone Biles Reaches New Heights

August 16, 2019

Have you ever cleared the height of an SUV? That’s how high Simone Biles jumped in her floor routine as she slayed the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, giving us a taste of what’s in store for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The twenty-two-year-old Olympic champion broke records, leaving as the second woman ever to gain her sixth all-around U.S. title.

On Sunday, Biles landed a historic triple-double in the floor competition. No woman has ever completed this move, and few men in the world have accomplished it. After finishing her routine, Biles ran to her phone to watch the move and even retweeted it during competition.

The triple-double is so difficult that the U.S. team believes it should be given a J-rating…of which there is currently no such thing. The letters of the sport’s code of points range from A to I, but it is possible the International Gymnastics Federation will make a J for Biles.

Biles also landed a double-double beam dismount during the weekend, the first ever gymnast to do so. Once she competes with the dismount in an international meet, it will become the third skill named after her.

Having won every meet she has entered since the 2013 National Championships, Biles is an unstoppable beast. It is evident she is even better than she was in the Rio Olympics, which seemed unimaginable at the time given her outstanding performance.

Biles is currently tied for the most medals by a female gymnast, and with only two months until the World Championships and a year away from Tokyo, fans are excited to see what’s next. If all goes well, Simone Biles could be looking at another fistful of Olympics medals.
