Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology

May 24, 2016

New York City. The Met. Anna Wintour. There isn’t much more that even needs to be said, however, we feel this year’s theme Manus (Hand) x Machina (Machine): Fashion in the Age of Technology was so innovative and cutting edge that it deserved our praise. For all of our readers who aren’t fully aware of the history behind the famous red carpet event, the Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. The glamorous event marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. The event first debuted in 1946 and has since remained to be the fashion industry’s premier annual red carpet event. Aside from the “star power” walking the famous red-carpeted stairs, viewers also tune in to see what the year’s theme will be and how the fashion will transcend. This year, Vogue’s editor-in-chief and event’s host, Anna Wintour, choose to shine the fashion spotlight on the union between handmade couture and machine-made fashion, a common union we see in retail stores all around. Presented in the Museum’s Robert Lehman Wing, the Costume Institute’s spring 2016 exhibition is showcasing the bridge between both fashion sectors. The exhibition explores the beginning of haute couture in the 19th century (when the sewing machine was invented) and the evolution to mass production. Attendees will be presented a series of case studies revealing the current hand vs. machine challenges. We still aren’t sure if Wintour was seeing if any of her guests would show up as robot or not, but regardless, we are most certainty tuning in next year to see what/who shows up!
