The Art of JOMO

July 13, 2018

Ever find yourself mindlessly scrolling through your social media? Feeling a sense of disdain for what you’re doing and envy about what everyone else is doing? Well, it’s time to shift your perspective. Enter JOMO, the sister of FOMO (“Fear of Missing Out”) who doesn’t give a damn. JOMO stands for “Joy of Missing Out” and it’s about embracing where you are and disconnecting from the constant buzz of social media on your smartphones. It’s no surprise that when you’re constantly connected and seeing all the “fun” – or the exciting highlight reel people post – everyone is having without you can have damaging effects. But that’s why, you should start to be excited to miss out and relish in the joy you can find in the moment you’re currently in. “JOMO is about disconnecting, opting out and being O.K. just where you are.” In fact, JOMO helps us feel comfortable when our text isn’t instantaneously answered, our likes aren’t high enough or our plans fall through. It’s about limiting our screen-time but increasing our real-world connections. Dinners that aren’t fragmented by aimless scrolling or conversations paused by the buzz of a phone. “Don’t think of JOMO as a detox, but more like an integral part to a healthy, well-balanced nutrition plan for your brain. You may not always want to do it, it may not always feel natural or fun, but, like that kale smoothie you choke down or the probiotics you spring for at Whole Foods, you do it because it’s good for you.” With that said, we hope you put a little JOMO in your life.
