June 5, 2020

Two black music industry executives Brianna Agyemang and Jamila Thomas, who work for music talent firm Platoon and Atlantic Records initiated this campaign to focus on the music industry. After word got out, other major recording companies backed the campaign. As black boxes filled our social news feed, we witnessed how #blackouttuesday became a global social media movement. The symbolic black squares was an initiative to go silent on social media, reflect on recent events and stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Instagram users had published more than 22 million posts with the #BlackOutTuesday hashtag. #BlackOutTuesday was also the top trending hashtag. It was a silence we all heard.
